HLS is proprietary to Apple, but an informational draft of the specification is publicly accessible via the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Scale and quality have traditionally come at the sacrifice of speedy delivery, but that’s all changing with Apple’s release of Low-Latency HLS.
